We are ecstatic to introduce you to the newest member of the Calvert family – KADEN!!! Kaden Wayne James Calvert was born on Sunday, March 18th, 2007 at 7:30am as a baby middle-weight (8lbs 14oz)!
His due-date was March 10th, but he had other plans. A week later, at our last doctor's appointment, it seemed that our little man was quite content to stay overdue and could have been snug-as-a-bug for another week. So to keep ourselves busy, we decided to go see a movie. With tickets in hand, we were suprised to have our labour start with a bang when Emma’s water broke at 6:10pm in the mall on the way up to the theatre!
Contractions began around and 8:00pm and, to us at least, seemed to quickly progress. Our doula knew better when at 2:00am over the phone she advised us to get some much needed rest (ha!) as this could be a long haul. The contractions seemed to slow down a bit, but our doctor asked us to come in at 10:00am Saturday for a check anyways just to see how things were going. We found that we were only at 1cm and had a fair amount of time still ahead of us, so we headed back to the house to ride it out.
We managed to take in a Canucks game on the tv, rest a little bit and generally spend the day 6 minutes at a time between Emma's contractions, until at 10:00pm we went back to the hospital again! Lo-and-behold we were at 7cm and were admitted right away. The room were given at BC Woman's Hospital was nothing short of amazing! It was a large private room with a bed for dad, a large tub, fridge, tv, and those who are lucky enough to get them can labour, deliver and post-partum all in the same comfortable space. We avoided the 'dungeon' rooms on the ground floor and felt much better about spending this time at the hospital in such a nice room.
Labour progressed between then and 6:00am when it kicked into high gear with Kaden's decision to get this show on the road. By 7:30am he was here and in our arms! To the hospital's credit, they never once took him away from us, he never left the room, and he never knew life without his parents the entire time we were in their care.
We stayed in the hospital for two days while and Kaden and mom were recovering and then welcomed the arrival of spring by bringing Kaden home.
