August

Bye Bye August - August 31, 2011
This week we are starting to transition Milo into his new preschool/daycare. He was only there for a couple hours today, but as soon as he got out of the car he lay down on the front walk! I think if I had left him there he might have gone to sleep! Poor tired monkey.

Block tower building and demotion - always a fun pastime. It's works even better with two sets of blocks for two boys!

Nature Walk around the Block - August 30, 2011
This afternoon, the boys and I strolled around the block collecting "nature"! Kaden also wanted to collect sounds (as was done by a character in a story in his Chirp magazine). He managed to stop once and draw a plane - a pretty good one at that - but afterwards I became the keeper of the paper and marker! It was more fun finding leaves, twigs, rocks and acorns! We got home and treated ourselves to a juicy pop before heading indoors to create some nature collages.

Soccer Star! - August 27, 2011
Another soccer season draws to a close. Both of the boys did really well this summer. Kaden missed his last lesson on account of being under the weather, but Milo represented for them both!

Hometown then downtown - August 25, 2011
In the morning we were joined by our buds for a playdate in the park. In the afternoon, the boys and I braved a trip downtown (on the Go Train AND subway) to visit Daddy at his office.

Technology in (in)action - August 23, 2011
It makes getting dinner ready a little easier...

Brothers - August 22, 2011
Cute :]

Let's go to the Ex! - Augsut 21, 2011
Always a childhood staple of Craig's - the rest of us Calverts got to experience our first annual visit to The Ex. Not only do we get to ride the Go Train to get there, but there was a whole section dedicated to kid's rides. Fun!

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Busker Fest - Augsut 20, 2011
Port Credit is a great place for hosting community events. We have been to several parades and festivals already and there is more we have yet to see. We decided to head down to the Busker's Fest this afternoon. The boys had fun playing with the hoola hoops available in the "Busker's Learning Area", but it wasn't as much fun for them to wade through the crowds to wait and see the performers. We did manage to catch the end of one performance where the buskers were launching themselves into the air doing acrobatic flips and turns, but Milo was happier running amok in the crowds. Another year perhaps.

And the day started so well... - August 19, 2011
The boys and I went to the new lakeshore park to play not only at the playground, but to check out the splash pad. Kaden got right in as usual, but Milo was not as happy with the ground randomly sending up jets of spray!

Monkey see monkey do??? Milo likes to do what Kaden does. Today it appeared like he was trying to copy his big brother's scar (and forehead split). Yikes! Milo was running down the upstairs hallway, tripped and flew right into the corner of the bathroom's door frame. The sound was as heart-stopping as Kaden's head collision, but fortunately the result was only a goose egg sized welt, mega-bruise and a line of red where the skin was on the verge of splitting. Poor little Milo. Dairy Queen was going to be on the menu before the incident, but it was very much deserved afterwards!

Who needs clothes when we've got books?! - August 18, 2011
I'm not sure why there are mostly naked boys on the couch with me! It's nice to be young and carefree.

Boys and our "toys" - August 17, 2011
Yup - the boys enjoy games like Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies and numerous other games I don't know and can't play! Two and four and they are already out-apping-me!

We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo! - August 14, 2011
Today was a great day to go to the zoo. We haven't been yet this summer and the temperature was just right - overcast, but warm. The boys were a little wary of sting ray bay this time around - Kaden remembers his salty-soaker from last summer, but the penguins were a big hit. We "rode" the elephants (do they look bigger this year...the boys, not the elephants!?) and of course we had to take a ride on the carosel.

Last year's elephant pictures...

Soccer Saturday - August 13, 2011
The boys showed off their soccer skills for N&P.

Hooray - Nanna and Poppa are here! - August 11, 2011
N&P are here to visit this weekend! As always - the boys are extremely happy to see them. After a ride around the block (where Kaden practices riding with no hands) we played in the backyard. Poppa is the best swing-pusher for sure!

Silly Hats and Pin Wheel Fun - August 10, 2011
It was silly hat/hair day at summer camp for Kaden today. Seeing as he has no hair for us to make silly I gave his silly hat some silly hair. Later in the day we needed to take a walk up to Bataglia's for a few groceries. Kaden had been asking to do some science experiments. So today's lesson was about wind!

Can you hear me??? - August 9, 2011
Milo is still not a fan of lying on his back in the pool, but he seems to like doing it in the tub :]

Slip and Walk?! - August 8, 2011
Apparently we have some work to do in teaching the boys the way of the slip 'n slide. I exceeded the recommended weight limit for this particular model or I would have demonstrated how it's done!

The boys have yet to embrace the slip 'n slide :]

Our First Trip to the Movies! - August 7, 2011
Poor Simon...he's here from France for just over 48 hours and he very graciously joined us for our first movie theatre experience - Winne the Pooh! The boys both enjoyed their first theatre adventure. Kaden was convinced the back of the theatre was the best place to sit and tried to convince every other movie go-er about it as they walked in! Milo was mostly excited about the popcorn, but he did a pretty good job staying relatively quiet and in his seat. Kaden wasn't to sure about the "Backsoon"...yes, even Winnie the Pooh can insight fear...but once he was safely on my lap he endured the whole thing and even came away smiling.

Happy Wedding Sarah and Gwil! - August 6, 2011
Our friends are in from Vancouver and France and we get a night out in Guelph to take part in our good friend's wedding. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful setting at the old mill ruins in the Rockwood Conservation Area, in Guelph. It was also HOT HOT HOT. To try to find some relief from the stifling heat between the ceremony and reception we decided to check out some nearby caves we heard about. Not really being dressed for spelunking we couldn't venture much farther than the mouth of the caves.

A new Do...and Shark Teeth - August 5, 2011
Kaden has had a small spot/scab on the top of is head that he keeps aggravating when he absentmindedly plays with his hair. To solve the problem we removed the hair! Not to be overlooked when snapping cute photos, Milo posed with his usually unruly curly locks and bared his shark teeth.

Deckmolition is starting to look a little more settled now. Craig finished building the stairs and while we save up to afford some kind of deck/patio we're laying gravel.

Canada's Wonderland - August 3, 2011
Today the Calvert-McCutcheon-Rodriguez clan ventured north to Canada's Wonderland! Today was the only day all week with sketchy weather, but it mostly worked in our favour. The park was nearly empty when we arrived to se had our pick of rides with no lines. It started raining on and off around lunchtime, but we were able to take shelter as needed and enjoy a few more rides before everyone was ready to pack it in anyway. It was nice that the sun wasn't shining too hot either. Everyone enjoyed their first time at the park.

It doesn't have to be hot to enjoy ice cream :]

We spent more of our morning in Planet Snoopy where there were ample rides for kids and adults alike. Milo was a wee small for a few of the rides (like the Ghoster Coaster and the bumper cars), but we found plenty to keep him amused.

We decided to take a bit of a break from the rides and go explore another area of the park. We wandered into Medieval Times where Ben whacked the most moles and we got to see a really cool diving show.

After lunch and a small rain shower we wandered back into another section of the kid's area. This time we found a roller coaster just the right size for Milo. He was pretty happy (we have the over-priced photo print to prove it!

Milo was falling asleep on Craig's shoulder as we started making our way back to the car, be we couldn't leave without stopping at the Jelly Bean Station. Our boys are jelly bean LOVERS!

It was a good day :]

A brief rest... - August 2, 2011
I'm not sure we were even out of the driveway on the way home to Mississauga before the boys both passed out!

We returned home with the cousins in tow to spend a couple days visiting chez nous. Mia was introduced to one of my childhood dolls (which was one of my mom's childhood dolls). The circle of life continues. She comes with a trunk full of clothes too - what's not to love :]

The sound of cousins (and only 3 of them were present)!

HAPPY LONG WEEKEND! - August 1, 2011
We couldn't have asked for a better way to spend the long weekend. Great friends/family, great location, great weather. Today we were being joined by a gaggle of others ready to enjoy a day at the lake, including a visit from Nanna and Poppa and overnight guests Uncle Drew and crew. Some other friends and family of Auntie Martha also joined in on the lake action. It was a packed house and tons of fun. The boys started their day fishing off the dock. Some day they will realize they can actually catch live fish!

We thought we would head out in the canoe while the water (and cottage) were quiet. It would be in high demand later in the day. This was Milo's first trip in a canoe. Both boys took a paddle, although Milo used his more for decoration and Kaden used his as a dental implement!

We of course spent most of the day getting in and out of the water. When on land the boys could be found lounging in the hammock, reading, playing games and eating! There were tons of grown-ups and kids on hand so there was never any time to be idle..

Once the crowds started to arrive we rotated turns on floaty boats, the dock, the boats and the amazing-motorized-steerable-giant-inner-tube! We took advantage of the neighbour's dock again. Cheers!

A wee bit of downtime...

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Super Milo!!!

Milo isn't ready to jump off the dock yet, but he still likes to get some air over the water!

Nothing quenches the heat like "juicy pops"!

A smattering of splashes from our jump-master-Calvert!
I especially love Kaden's pie-eyed look when he comes to the surface :]
